Merce Cunningham

Merce Cunningham is a a very well respected choreographer whose works changed the world of dance.  During his lifetimes, he engaged in a fifty year partnership with John Cage, a revolutionary composer.  They redefined the relationship between the dancer and the music, making them independent from one another.  Their process works like this: one would set a time frame that they would each compose within.  On performance night the dancers and musicians would play together for the first time without any rehearsal.  They felt that this allowed their art to expand without boundaries or restraints.  If that's not taking a chance, what is?!
